Below are fields managed for dove hunting by Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks & Tourism. Weather, soil moisture, and other factors could prevent management as planned. For the most up-to-date information, click on the area name in the left column or contact the area manager.

Sunflowers were planted on a 14 acre field and portions will be mowed. One 8 acre field of wheat stubble will be mowed or burned prior to the season opener. Several, small ponds in the middle of the area also attract doves.

The entire area will be open to Youth / Mentor / Novice hunters ONLY for the first 2 days of the season (September 1 & 2). The area will be open to all hunters on Sept. 3 and through September 30.

Cedar Bluff

Two fields (wheat and proso millet) will be mowed and available. Wheat fields should provide the best food sources and hunting success. Proso field will have only 50% seed production due to drought conditions.

Field #1 is designated Youth / Mentor ONLY for the entire season and is located east of dam. Both Youth (under 18) and Mentor may hunt.

Field #2 is located in the Page Creek Area is Open To All Hunters.

Glen Elder

County Line Field – 3 miles east of Downs, on Mitchell/Osborne County line, 1 mile south of Hwy 24 (100 Rd.) – One 24 acre sunflower field. Open To All Hunters for the entire season. Current prospects are GOOD.

East Granite Creek Fields – 1/4 mile north of Hwy 24 directly east of Granite Creek cove – 3 sunflower fields totaling 25 acres. Open to all hunters for the entire season. Current prospects are FAIR. Parking area is where D Road ends at WA boundary.

Cawker City Field- ½ mile southwest of Cawker City below the dike- One 29 acre sunflower field. This field and the surrounding area will be reserved on September 1 for a youth dove hunt. Fisherman’s Bridge Field – 1/8 mile northeast of Fisherman’s Bridge near the intersection of I road and 110 road. – One 16 acre sunflower field. Open to all hunters for the entire season. Current prospects are FAIR to GOOD. Lots of weed competition.

West Walnut Creek Fields – South side of the main lake, just southeast of the intersection of H road and 170 road (which is closed). – One 11 acre sunflower field with an 8 acre wheat stubble field nearby. Open to all hunters for the entire season. The Walnut Creek area is now open to all hunters year round. Current propspects are FAIR. Wheat stubble field should draw some birds.

Jamestown

The Sunflowers sprouted late due to the drought and dove use should improve throughout the season as the plants ripen.

Doves are also attracted to the shallow water areas found on the area.

A 240-acre dove hunting area (#1) has been created north along Vale Road between 30th and 40th Rds. Eighteen acres of Sunflowers will be manipulated. This area will be posted Open to Youth & Novice / Mentor hunters only for the first 2 days of the season (Sept. 1 & 2). Youth/Novice hunters must be accompanied by an adult 18 or older who may hunt this area as long as they have at least 1 youth or novice hunter with them. Novice hunters are those hunters 17 or younger or any person who has not hunted doves before. The entire 240-acre area will open to all hunters on September 3.

Field #2 - 7 acre Sunflower field - From the intersection of 10th Rd and Hwy. 28, ½ mile north on the Gun Club Southwest Access road. Open to all hunters for the entire season.

Field #3 - Wheat field will be manipulated by mowing or burning. Located south of Republic Rd. between 30th Rd and 20th Rd on the east side of Gun Club Marsh

Field #4 - Wheat field will be manipulated by mowing or burning. Located west of 30th Rd between Vale Rd. and Wagon Road on the east side of Marsh Creek Marsh.

Mandatory Daily Hunter Survey permits are required and are available at the Information Centers.

Norton

One 12 acre field and one 8 acre field (both proso millet) have been planted to be used as dove fields and will be mowed or burned depending on fire restrictions in Norton County. Germination of seed in each field was low due to the summer drought situation. Both fields will be Open To All Hunters throughout the season.

Kansas River Wildlife Area

Urish Tract- Twelve acres of sunflowers. All hunting will be by permit. Hunting permits for the first three days of the season will be issued through the draw in the department’s Special Hunts program. Beginning on September 4th hunting will be available to everyone but you must obtain a daily hunt permit available at the kiosk on Urish Road. A safety zone will be enforced on this property. The safety zone will be marked in the field and is designated on the area brochure. Please check the information kiosk for further information. The field is located one mile north of Tenth & Urish in Topeka. A map of the wildlife area is located at the Kansas River Wildlife Area webpage.

Fitzgerald Tract – Twelve acres of sunflowers. All hunting will be done by permits issued through the department’s Special Hunts program. This is a youth/mentor hunt area. The mentor is allowed to hunt. The use of non-toxic shot is required for this area. The field is located approximately eight miles west of Topeka on I-70 and ½ mile east of west union road & 4th Street. A map of the wildlife area is located at the Leslie T. and Lydia A. Fitzgerald Wildlife Area webpage.

Mac Vicar Tract- Ten acres of sunflowers. All hunting will be done by permits issued through the department’s Special Hunts program. Access to this site is extremely limited and participants will be required to park in a designated parking area. Dove hunts will be allowed only from 8 am - 4:00 pm Monday - Saturday. Hunting on Sundays & Holidays will require other special arrangements. Each hunter must have in their possession the department issued hunt permit and report the results of their hunt electronically at the conclusion of their hunt. This property is located at I-70 and Mac Vicar road next to the forestry recycling center within the City Limits of Topeka. All hunting is with non-toxic shot. There is a NO FIREARMS zone in this field. Hunters are required to have their firearm cased until they are in the hunting zone. Perry

Seven managed dove fields are located on the Perry Wildlife Area totaling 83 acres. All fields on the area are mixed fields with wheat centers and sunflower borders except for one 3.5 acre solid sunflower field on Headwater Road. One 19 acre field is located straight south of the area office or northeast of Headquarters Marsh Parking lot. Two fields are located on 190th Street. The field south of 190th is 21.6 acres and is open general dove hunting. North of 190th Street is our REFUGE field that will be closed to all hunting September 1st –September 3rd and will open on September 4th. A non-toxic shot only field, 4.6 acres, is located just west of Reichart marsh’s northwest unit. Two fields are located on Headwater Road one 3.5 acre sunflower and one 5.3 acre mixed field. One youth/mentor/handicap field located just west of Ferguson Road totaling 15 acres. All fields will have daily use permits. Clinton

Eight dove fields within the Wildlife area. Field 1 – Located on 1400 Rd on the Deer Creek arm. 6 acres of wheat/sunflower mix. This field is located ~100 south of where it has been traditionally to increase its size. Field 2 (Non-toxic shot only) – Located in the SW pool of the Coblentz wetlands near Woodring Rd (County line). 8 acres of wheat. Fields 2 & 3 will share the same survey station. Field 3 – Located directly SW of the parking lot for the Coblentz wetlands. 8 acres of wheat/sunflower mix. Fields 2 & 3 will share the same survey station. Field 4 – ½ mile west of Woodring Rd (County line) on the south side of 89th St. 9 acres of sunflowers. Field 5 – ¼ mile south of 89th St, and ¼ mile east of Shadden Rd. 3 acres of sunflowers. Survey station will be located in the parking lot off of Shadden Rd. Field 6 (Youth/Mentor field) – Located ½ mile south of 89th St west of Shadden Rd. 7 acres of wheat/sunflower mix. This field will be reserved on Sept 1st for a special youth dove hunt until 12 noon. After that, it will be open for youth/mentor hunting only, until Sept 4th where it will then open to all public. Youth/mentor hunting means youth 16 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Adults may hunt as long as they are with a youth that is hunting. Field 7 – Located ½ mile west of the Elk Creek wetland entrance. 7 acres of wheat/sunflower mix. Field 8 (Non-toxic only) – Located ¼ mile east of the Elk Creek wetland parking lot. 4 acres of sunflowers

Milford

Eight sunflower fields totaling 76 acres ranging in size from 4 acres to 19 acres. One field is located on the West Broughton Youth/ Mentor Area where steel shot is required and all adults must be accompanied by a youth. Strips will be mowed in two stages starting the week of August 20 and with the second round being mowed the week of the 27th. Two or three wheat stubble patches totaling about 15 acres, approximately 5 acres each will be mowed. A map is available on the Milford Area news page. All hunters using managed dove fields are required to obtain and complete a daily hunt permit.

Hillsdale

There are 3 areas and 4 fields managed for doves at Hillsdale Wildlife Area for the 2012 season. All managed dove field maps can be found on Hillsdale WA web page, or you can pick up maps at the Hillsdale State Park Office. All sunflower fields did very poorly due to the drought in the area. Most places did not even produce much seed. With lack of wheat in the areas and poor sunflower production, I would expect the hunting to be very poor. There have been doves flying in the area.

Area 1 - Youth Mentor Area- which is located ¼ mile West of the intersection of Waverly Rd and 255th Street is a Youth Mentor area for the first two days of the season. Those dates are September 1st and 2nd, the first Saturday and Sunday of the season. Youth mentor is when a youth of 17 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult 21 years and older. Both youth and their mentor may hunt. After September 2nd the field will open to all parties. Pay attention to ALL signs in area. Daily permit will be required before hunting. Permit is available at field. The field is made up of approximately 9 acres of sunflowers. Sunflowers did best on this field, should provide some decent hunting opportunity.

Area 2 - East and West Wade Dove Fields- Areas are located North and East of Wade Branch access area. Habitat: The fields are made up of approximately 32 acres of sunflowers/weeds. Sunflowers did very poor due to drought.

Area 3 - 223rd St Dove Field- Area is located approximately 4 miles west of HWY 169 on 223rd St. and south of KDWPT parking lot. Habitat: The field is made up of approximately 10 acres of sunflowers. Sunflowers did very poor due to drought.

Elwood

There are two sunflower dove fields located on Elwood Wildlife Area. Please remember to pick up a daily permit/survey card in parking areas before hunting.
A 7 acre field is located on Elwood East. Park at the eastern most parking area and walk down the gravel road. The sunflower field will be on the west side of the road and runs east and west along the south side of the corn field.
The other 2.5 acre sunflower field is located at the western most parking area on the west side of the trees just south of the parking area.
-There is a new property west of Elwood just south of Wathena, KS approximately .5 miles and on the east side of the road. There is one 8 acre sunflower field at this location. Please remember to get a daily permit/survey card before hunting and be careful not to shoot towards River Road.

Benedictine Bottoms

There are two sunflower fields and one wheat field on Benedictine Wildlife Area. Please remember to pick up a daily permit/survey card in parking areas before hunting. One sunflower field is just south of the main parking area along the west side of the drainage ditch and runs all the way to the levee.
The second sunflower field is in the south central part of the wildlife area on the north side of the levee just east of the gravel road that access the levee. The wheat field is about one mile straight east of the main parking area on the north side of the gravel road.

Bolton

5 sunflower fields totaling 7 acres and 6 wheat fields totaling 6 acres have been planted. Both wheat and sunflowers look great and will be burned/mowed in the weeks leading up to the dove opener. Free daily hunt permits will be required of all hunters and are available at hunt site. The area is located 2 1/2 miles north and 1 1/2 miles west of Paxico along Mulberry Creek Rd. No special restrictions on these fields.

Jeffrey Energy Center

UNIT #1: 2 wheat fields totaling 2.5 acre and two sunflower fields totaling 3.5 acres have been planted in Unit #1. Wheat will be burnt in stages starting the second week of August. Sunflower fields look great and will be mowed before the opener. Free daily hunt permits will be required of all hunters and are available at hunt site. Unit 1 is located 2 1/2 miles north of Belvue and the fields may be accessed along Tower Hill and Marks Rds. No special restrictions on these fields. Unit #2: 5 wheat fields totaling 8 acres and 4 sunflower fields totaling 9 acres have been planted in Unit #2. These fields will be mowed/burned in stages leading up to the dove opener. Fields in Unit #2 are reserved for special youth hunts done by Westar Energy the first weekend of season. Fields are open to public after the first weekend. The wheat and sunflowers below Aux Lake look great. Free daily hunt permits will be required of all hunters and are available at hunt site. Hunters must check in with the Guard House before entering Unit #2.

Nemaha

Two acres of sunflowers and three acres of wheat are available. Parking is available in the parking area on the east side of Hwy 63. The fields are a short walk east from there. No special restrictions on these fields.

Noe

The Noe Wildlife Area has several dove hunting opportunities administered through the departments Special Hunts Program. There is approximately seven acres of sunflowers on this area. You can enter "special hunts" in the search box at our home page to get more information or to apply for these hunting opportunities. Deadline to apply for these hunts is August 13th. You may contact the Region 2 office after that date to check on hunt availability. All of these dove hunts are "BUDDY HUNTS". Five permits will be drawn for each hunt period. Either morning or afternoon. Successful applicants can bring ONE buddy to hunt with them. The morning hunt period will begin at legal shooting time until 11 AM. The afternoon hunt period will begin at 1 PM until sunset. ALL HUNTERS MUST USE NON-TOXIC SHOT. Each hunter must have in their possession the department issued hunt permit and deposit the completed permit at the designated location at the conclusion of their hunt.

Tuttle Creek

Three areas of managed dove fields are available. Free daily hunt permits will be required of all hunters and are available at hunt site. Area 1- One 10 acre sunflower field and one 13 acre wheat field. The fields are located at the Old Irving Townsite, or 2 ½ miles south and 3 miles east of Blue Rapids. No special restrictions on these fields. Area 2- One 13 acre sunflower field and one 25 acre wheat field. The fields are located just west of the Black Vermillion Marsh, or 2 miles south of the intersection of Zenith and 14th roads. No special restrictions on these fields. Area 3- One 20 acre sunflower field and one 17 acre wheat field. The fields are located just south of the Olsburg Marsh, or ¼ mile west of the intersection of Shannon Creek and Cleburne roads. Non-toxic shot will be required of all hunters on these fields due to the close proximity to the marsh.

Cheyenne Bottoms

Dry conditions have limited sunflower production as of 7/19. If conditions improve, there will be one 5-acre field of wheat stubble over-seeded with sunflowers. The field is located 0.8 miles east of the intersection of K-156 and NE 50 Rd. Nontoxic shot required. All hunters using managed dove fields are required to obtain and complete a daily hunt permit. Four acres of sunflower were planted along the Mitigation Marsh for youth hunting. All hunters using managed dove fields are required to obtain and complete a daily hunt permit.

Texas Lake

One 4.5 acre mowed winter wheat field immediately North and West of the parking lot located 1.5 miles north and .5 miles East of the intersection of Hwy. 54 and 130th Ave.

Approximately 5 acres of wheat in 2 small fields that matured and then was grazed. These fields will also be mowed prior to dove season if it will improve conditions. Location: ¼ mile South of the parking lot located 2.5 miles North and ¾ miles West of the intersection of Hwy. 54 and 130th Ave.

Non-toxic shot is required. All hunters are required to complete a free daily hunt permit available at parking lots on the wildlife area.

There are also other dove hunting opportunities available at Texas Lake Wildlife Area and at nearby Pratt Sandhills Wildlife Area.

Cheney

Field #1 = One field south of the Wildlife Area office will be designated for Youth hunting on September 1st only. Shooting hours will be from ½ hour before sunrise to 12:00 noon. Kaw

Kaw Wildlife Area will have two areas for dove harvest. One will be 18 acre sunflower field located at the parking lot of 111th Rd. This field will be mowed prior to dove season and a small portion will be left standing The second one will be a harvested 38 acre wheat field that will be disked. The field has trees on the north side is heavily used by area doves. It is located south of Silverdale on Cowley 1 on the west side. It is the just north of the third bridge and south of 304th Road. All hunters using managed dove fields are required to obtain and complete a free daily hunt permit.

Marion Wildlife Area will have two dove management fields this year. A seven acre sunflower field is located just south of the French Creek bridge on the west side of Kanza Road. The second 15 acre sunflower field is located just south of 220th and Limestone Road. The majority of these fields will be mowed prior to the September 1st opener.

McPherson Wetlands

McPherson Wetlands will have two dove management fields this year, both located at the Farland Lake unit southeast of Inman. Field 1 is a 30 acre sunflower field located 1.5 miles south and 1 mile east of Inman, or 1/2 mile south of 9th and Buckskin Road. This field will be restricted to youth and their mentor on the first morning (1/2 hour before sunrise till noon) of season. After noon, this field will be open to all hunters. Field 2 is a 70 acre sunflower field located 1.5 miles south and 2 miles east of Inman, or 1/2 mile south of 10th and Buckskin Road. The majority of these fields will be harvested. Most of the remaining crop will then be mowed with a small portion left standing. Non-toxic shot is required. Previous dove management efforts in this area have produced outstanding hunting opportunities.

El Dorado

Two sunflower tracts (22 & 37 acres) and one adjacent wheat stubble field (37 acres) should provide fair to good dove hunting opportunities at El Dorado Wildlife Area. Portions of each of the sunflower fields will be mowed (if conditions allow) to enhance dove use and hunter access. The 22 acre sunflower field can be found just west of the Chelsea cemetery or approximately 0.5 miles south of the junction of NE 70th Street and NE Cole Creek Road. The 37 acre sunflower field can be accessed from the east by traveling 0.5 mile north of the junction of NE 70th Street and Interstate 35, or from the west by traveling 0.5 mile south of the junction of NE 85th Street and NE Chelsea Road. To the east of this sunflower field is a 37 acre wheat stubble field which may also be attractive habitat to area doves and provide hunting opportunities. Dove hunters may be asked to obtain a permit prior to hunting and to report harvest at the conclusion of their hunt. Please assist area staff with evaluating these opportunities by following instructions located at permit stations posted at each field. Hunters are also reminded to please be courteous and aware of other hunting parties while using these fields! Council Grove

Three sunflower tracts (9, 10, 7 acres) and one wheat tract (7 acres) should provide fair to good dove hunting opportunities at Council Grove Wildlife Area. Portions of each of the sunflower fields will be mowed (if conditions allow) to enhance dove use and hunter access. Portions of fields that remain standing may belong to an area agricultural producer. Please respect that producer and avoid disturbing their crop. The 7 acre wheat field is comprised of approximately 5 acres of wheat stubble and 2 acres of standing wheat that will be mowed (if conditions allow). It can be found just south of the parking area at the west end of M Avenue. The parking area can be reached by traveling about 0.35 miles east of the Kelso church on M Avenue and taking the south fork in the road and continuing east about 0.7 miles. The 9 acre sunflower tract can be found just east of the eastern most parking area along the north side of Munkers Creek. The 10 acre sunflower field is located about 0.25 miles south of the parking area and information kiosk west of Slough Creek on M Avenue. The 7 acre sunflower field is located south of the parking area and information kiosk near Gilmore Creek. Dove hunters may be asked to obtain a permit prior to hunting and to report harvest at the conclusion of their hunt. Please assist area staff with evaluating these opportunities by following instructions located at permit stations posted at each field. Berentz-Dick (Buffalo Ranch)

There are three sunflower fields located on the Buffalo Ranch WA. The fields are 5.5 miles north of Havana, then go 1 mile west of the intersection of CR 4000 and 1350 to the Chautauqua/Montgomery county line to the primary entrance and parking area. Hunting is restricted to Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday only. Hunters are required to complete the free survey cards.

Fall River

Four sunflower fields totaling approximately 59 acres and one, 18 acre wheat field. One sunflower field is located on T Road approximately 1 1/2 mile South of 130th St., the second field is about 1/4 mile south of 100th and V Road, the last two are about 1 ½ mile east of KS 99 on 80th St. just east of the office. The fields on 80th street will be closed to hunting until the evening of September 8th for a youth dove hunt. A map of the dove fields can be found on the Fall River webpage. Hollister

There are approximately 19 acres of managed dove fields planted to sunflowers on the HOWA. The field is located a little over 1/4 mile east of the intersection of 140th and Grand Rd. If you go past the old railroad tracks you have gone too far. Field is located 300 yards north of Grand Rd. Vehicles will be allowed to park on the road, absolutely no vehicles will be allowed to leave a maintained roadway. All hunters using the sunflower field are required to obtain and complete a free daily hunt permit.

One 20-acre field located east of Snider Road, 1 mi north of 1350 Rd. 1/2 sunflowers, 1/2 mowed wheat. Crop production good and considerable seed on the ground. Only non-toxic shot is allowed. Prediction: fair - good. All hunters using managed dove fields in this region are required to obtain and complete a daily hunt permit.

Mined Land

Two unrestricted sunflower fields will be available to dove hunters. One field is located on unit 38 and is 19 acres in size. This field is located two miles south of NW 50th and 102 hwy. A second field is located on unit 45 and is 10 acres in size. This field is located a ½ mile east of NW 50th and NW Liberty road. No age or time restrictions.

Dove Flats

New for 2012, this property is open to all hunters regardless of age for the entire season.The youth/mentor hunting field is located on the Elk City Wildlife Area. Dove Flats has 1 sunflower field that is 15 acres in size. Sunflowers will be mowed and/or lightly disked in the weeks leading up to the opener. Wheat stubble planted to beans is in adjacent fields. A Free Daily Hunt Permit will be required to hunt this property. The parking lot and registration access is located ½ mile south of the intersection of County Roads 2300 and 5600. The sunflowers are located 1/3RD mile east of the parking lot and cannot be seen from the roadway. All hunters using managed dove field areas are required to obtain and complete a daily hunt permit.

Elk City

Elk City WA has 3 sunflower field management areas. They include a 10 acre youth/mentor field and also 17 and 20 acre fields that are open to all hunters. Dove Management Hunting Areas will be posted prior to the season opener. All fields are located west of Independence, Ks. The sunflowers will be partially mowed prior to season. All hunters using managed dove field areas are required to obtain and complete a free daily hunt permit located at the primary field entrances. A hunting license and HIP stamp is required according to age. Vehicles are restricted to parking areas and roadsides only, no off road parking in the hunt areas is allowed.

The first field is designated youth/mentor. The youth/mentor field is restricted to youth 17 years old and younger and must be supervised by a mentor 18 and older. This field is designated youth/mentor for the entire designated season. Only one mentor per youth is allowed to hunt. It is located 1/4th mile south of the Elk City State Park entrance on the west side of the county road. Hunters are only allowed in the designated dove hunting area, due to the proximity to the Elk City State Park. This designated and posted area will be indicated on aerial photos at the registration box.

The second area is located ¼ mile north of the intersection of County Roads 2900 and 4200 and has sunflowers, wheat stubble and corn. The third area is located ¼ mile west of County Roads 3325 and 4600 and also has sunflowers, wheat stubble and corn. These areas are open to all hunters regardless of age.

Melvern

Melvern Wildlife Area has 3 sunflower fields that will be managed for dove hunting opportunity. Field #1 is approximately 20 acres and is located ½ mile north of the intersection of west 293rd St. and S Indian Hills Rd. in Osage Co. This portion of the wildlife area is open to youth/mentor hunting only (adults may hunt as long as accompanied by youth <16 years is also hunting). Field #2 is approximately 12 acres and is located 1/3 mile west of the intersection of W 293rd St. and S Crawford Rd. in Osage County. Field #3 is approximately 7.5 acres and is located ½ mile north of the intersection of W 325th St. and S Davis Rd. in Osage Co.

Hunters are required to obtain a free daily hunt permit prior to hunting and return the completed permit at the end of their hunt.
