The Kansas River Wildlife Area consists of four different tracts in Shawnee, Riley and Geary Counties all adjacent to the Kansas River. The Riley and Geary County tracts are currently under development. The Riley County tract provides an additional motor boat access site to the Kansas River near Ogden as well as walk-in access to 300 acres of river bottom ground. The Riley county tract will be closed to hunting until the constuction of the new highway is complete. The Geary county tract is open to hunitng. Firearms deer hunting is not allowed on any of these tracts. The two Shawnee County tracts include over 200 acres of farmland and riparian corridors. Special use restrictions are in place for all properties. Please check the area kiosk or with the Topeka Regional office for these restrictions or questions.
The Mac Vicar Road Area is located within the City limits of Topeka and is only open to archery hunting through the Department’s special hunts program. You can check online at kdwp.state.ks.us to view these opportunities.
The Urish Road Area is located on the north end of Urish Road, is adjacent to the City limits of Topeka and provides a variety of outdoor opportunities. An emphasis is placed upon youth and mentor experiences.
Methods of hunting are limited to shotgun and archery only. No firearms deer hunting is allowed. All hunting is managed through the special hunts program or by daily permits available at the kiosk. During the special hunts access will be limited to those drawn in the hunt. Please check the kiosk or with the office prior to hunting.
One third of the tract will be utilized for a dove management field for youth/novice hunters by the planting of wheat and sunflowers. Other hunting opportunities include deer, turkey and waterfowl.
A safety zone has been established on this tract that prohibits the discharge of any firearm. This will be strictly enforced and all violations will be cited. You can view the safety zone map HERE.
