The early corn harvest kept the doves from being as concentrated on the area as they had been in the past. Even with the drought and early harvest 163 hunters harvested 705 doves in the first ten days of the season. Winter wheat has been planted for 2013 season and is coming up. The amount of winter moisture will determine how the wheat does this season.
Prepararions for the upcoming burn season are about to begin. The native grass pasture on the area has been under patch-burn grazing for the last two years. In this system we have been burning 1/3 or the grass each spring to more closely mimic the traditional burning/grazing patterns of the historic tallgrass prairie. This fall/winter the firebreak around the third section of the pasture will be mowed and prepared for the burn that will likely occure in April.
Mulberry Creek has dried up to only small pockets of water due to the drought. The ponds on the area are extremely low. They have not dried up yet, but if we do not recieve winter moisture they may be in trouble next summer.
