The South Fork Wildlife Area is located 12.5 miles northeast of Saint Francis in Cheyenne County. The area is bisected by the Republican River, and has a mixture of grasslands, crop fields and riparian timber. The grasslands are periodically grazed or burned in the spring to increase range health. Food plots are planted and many consist of wheat, corn, milo, sunflower and alfalfa.
WILDLIFE
Both game and non-game species are on the area, but numbers are low. Hunting opportunities are limited as wildlife are easily harvested or driven off the area. White-tailed deer, mule deer and Rio Grande turkeys are transient visitors moving on and off the area throughout the year. Pheasant and quail populations are low. During the spring and fall, however, a small number of ducks use the Republican River as a resting area.
FUNDING
South Fork Wildlife Area is funded by the hunters and fisherman of Kansas. Due to the small size of the area, various ways to increase the quality of hunting are currently being investigated. Some ideas being considered include a special hunt area with limited number of permits to be issued, seasonal access restrictions, and a refuge.
