The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks Trails Advisory Board will hold a public meeting Monday, December 5, 2011, at the Great Plains Nature Center, 6232 E. 29th Street N, Wichita, Kansas, for the purpose of hearing and discussing projects previously submitted for funding under the Recreational Trails Fund Act. The meeting will begin at noon in the Auditorium. Signs on the premises will provide directions to the meeting room. Persons interested in commenting on projects should attend this meeting. Grant applicants are encouraged to attend and discuss their proposals. Time for comments will be limited. Final decisions about proposals will not be made at this meeting, but must go to the KDWPT Commission for approval.

Congress passed an extension of the Recreational Trails Program in its current form until March 30, 2012. We have yet to hear from the Federal Highway Administration what our allocation and restrictions might be. Part of the agreement to pass the extension was that changes will be made before another extension is passed. What those changes may encompass, we do not know.

The application period for the Recreational Trails Grant closed August 1, 2011 for grants to be awarded in Federal Fiscal Year 2012.

Potential sponsors should be aware that the current trails program authorization officially ended September 30, 2009. It was extended for 2010 and 2011 as part of a continuing budget authorization. Some guidance has come from Congress about the shape of a new program, but nothing has yet been decided, and the future of the RTP grant is very much in question. It is possible that the program could simply go away, but there is very high public support for a trails grant program.

Public entities interested in developing trails should download the Recreational Trails application by clicking on the Grant Applications link below. Applications for this grant for Federal Fiscal Year 2012 will be accepted until August 1, 2011.
