Fishing will be improving as the water warms up and some species prepare to spawn. Fishing at La Cygne produces a mixed bag of fish from big blue or flathead catfish, to white bass and wipers or crappie and largemouth bass. Anglers can walk in to the hot water outlet area from the east parking lot. The location is: at 69 HWY and Ks HWY 152, go east on E.2200 Rd., turn north at Young Rd. and go West at E. 2400 Rd. to the parking lot. We want to say Thanks again for your help to Keep the Fishing Areas Clean!

Fishing activity and fishing success has improved greatly this past week. Crappie are starting to move shallow to about 6 ft of water around the lake. They are not on the shore yet but close. Shore Anglers as well as Boat Anglers have been having success using a minnow bobber combo and black and pink tube jigs. Channel catfishing has picked up with good success on 2-7lb fish in the coves and near boat ramps. People have been catching them near the ramps with crappie guts and dip bait has been proving successful all over the lake. While out patrolling the reservoir from my patrol boat, I've witnessed numerous schools of white bass and wipers blowing up on the surface chasing bait fish. Only a few anglers have been targeting them but the ones who are, are having excellent fishing. Hope this helps.

Largemouth Bass

Fair/good

All sizes

Try jigs, worms, spinner baits, or crankbaits fished around brush, structure, or along weedlines. Most bass have completed spawning.

Rainbow trout

Good

10 - 15"

Try power bait, small spinners, spoons, flies, small crankbaits, worms, or corn. Bi-weekly stockings of 935 fish resumed Oct.13, 2011 and will continue through May 2012. Most rainbows are 10 inches in length when stocked, and average 1/2 lb. each. Five percent of each stocking is comprised of 14-inch or larger fish. Trout can live year-around in this unique strip-mined lake, so fish in the 3-5 pound range are occassionally caught.

General Comments

Surface water temperatures are now ranging from 70 - 75 degrees. Trout Anglers - Youth 15 and younger are not required to purchase a trout permit, but their daily creel limit is 2 trout/day. All anglers 16 and older are required to have a trout stamp to fish in the trout lake in Area # 30. Brown trout less than 20-inches in length must be returned to the water immediately. The creel limit for browns is one fish per day. This regulation is being implemented to improve the quality of fishing, and hopefully, a trophy fishery can some day be established. Browns were first stocked in October 2008, with additional stockings of 7 to 10-inch fish in 2010 and 2011.

Crappie

Fair

8-14 inches

Look for crappie on vertical structure in deep water. If you find suspended crappie, jigs or minnows should get bit.

Channel catfish

Fair

8-30 inches

Slowly drifting shad sides can be effective this time of year. Expect light bites.

Largemouth Bass

Fair

8-16 inches

Think slow for largemouth bass this time of year. You might have luck with reaction baits in afternoons on warm, sunny days, but sight baits fished on steep rocky banks and underwater features are probably the best bet.

General Comments

Fish have moved into a winter pattern as water temperatures have fallen into the 40s. The lake is still low so boat launching might be problematic for larger vessels. Take care to avoid obstacles created by low water levels.

Get the kids, get your friends and Go Fishing. Fishing will be improving as the water warms up and some species prepare to spawn.

I had a angler report that on saturday, March 17th. catching 50-60 bass from a boat, caught along the shore in shallow water. Most were in around 15 inches.

Lets GO FISHING. Grab the kids, call a friend and go to the local lake. Reports from bass anglers indicate that most are caught away from the edge in deep water. The bass are in the trees down to 8 feet. Most are caught on jignpig style baits. The water level is great for fishing.

Recent fish population sampling indicates alot of very nice crappie, most in the 10 to 14 inch range and in very good condition. This lake has lots of cover and crappie are hard to find but when you do, there will be lots of good fish.

Buy your state fishing license and have fun. Remember the special length/creel limits. Get the kids, get your friends and Go Fishing.
